"Smores"gasbord

We had a smoresgasbord for our second quarter treat. We had peppermint marshmallow, chocolate mint marshmallow, regular marshmallows and chrostmas shaped marshmallows as well as butterscotch chips, chocolate chips. peanut butter chips, and white chocolate chips. Everyone got to make their own smore creations. We have just discovered that colored marshmallows are messier than we thought.

Oatmeal Bar

My friends, let me tell you about Oatmeal Bar. This is a delicious breakfast, brunch, or dinner option when you want something simple, fast, tasty, and good for you too.

The premise is simple. Make a big pot of oatmeal- as many servings as people and maybe one or two extra if you have big oatmeal eaters.

Next assemble a range of toppings. Today we had milk, whipped cream, brown sugar, craisins. Sounds pretty standard so far, right? We also had chocolate chips, dried blueberries, marshmallows and crushed peppermints.

The beauty of Oatmeal Bar is the customizability. Everyone gets to add what they like to their own bowl of oatmeal. Everyone gets a meal they enjoy. A good rule of thumb is 1/2 cup topping per person. And if you are hosting guests, that means a greater variety of toppings.

Think outside the box, er... bowl. I like butter, chopped nuts, coconut, peanut butter, jam, chopped fruit (apples, peaches, bananas, strawberries, mangoes), dried fruits, rhubarb sauce, bacon, cheese, sausage, m+m's, reese's pieces, candied ginger. You get the picture. I would add that you will need a lot of spoons for the toppings. Plastic spoons will not tip out of the bowls, flipping your favorite topping all over. Also I like to use snack cups (Tupperware) to hold the toppings because they hold just 1/2 cup, have straight sides so you can fit more on the tray, and I have quite a few to accommodate the variety of toppings we like to have.

And don't forget the oatmeal itself. What?! I like the texture of steel cut oats myself, but this idea can be adapted to any hot cereal- 7 grain, cream of wheat, rolled oats, grits, rice. Yes, rice. A nice big pot of hot rice.

My friends, why not make a meal your whole group will enjoy. Try Oatmeal Bar today!
